Details: This half-day excursion will explore both the botany of the creek banks—including native plants and weeds—and the aquatic life within the creek itself. We’ll look for freshwater invertebrates, fish, and algae, gaining a well-rounded understanding of this riparian ecosystem.
With a bit of luck, we may encounter the Common Shutwing (Cordulephya pygmaea) dragonfly (see image below). These distinctive dragonflies often perch on tree trunks or even power poles during the day, making them excellent photographic subjects. Although it is late in the dragonfly season and numbers are expected to be low, this site remains particularly significant. For being the only known location within the Brisbane City Council region for several species, including the vulnerable Coastal Petaltail (Petalura litorea), and the Coastal Flatwing (Griseargiolestes albescens) and Coastal Evening Darner (Telephlebia tryoni).
For those with a botanical interest, the area features a Tall Saw-sedge (Gahnia clarkei) swamp alongside diverse riparian vegetation. Much of the site is currently undergoing rehabilitation by the Bulimba Creek Catchment Coordinating Committee, and we will take a close look at this work in progress. A key focus of the excursion will be surveying and identifying weed species along the creek banks.
