Details: Inge Scott and Dick Copeman performed a recce for this lovely island excursion on a warm 31°C Day on 18 February. We investigated three sites at Point Lookout; the two sites chosen contained a large range of species.
The first site is at Pt Lookout Oval, a short walk through the oval across a fern covered marsh which leads to Home Beach. Home Beach consists of open marshlands containing many low growing plants, sedges, rushes, pennyworts, etc. A variety of dragon and damsel flies may also be present. A Shutwing (Genus Cordulephya) RHS image was seen on the recce.
The next site is the stunning Gorge Walk at Pt Lookout, where dolphins, turtles, osprey etc. were sighted. In June humpback whales should also be present.
At 75-minute intervals, the 880 bus continues to Pt Lookout Gorge (2km further up the road). We plan to have an early lunch break before the Gorge Walk. Bring 1-2L water. Both sites have toilets and water fountains close by. Bring your own lunch or purchase cafe style lunches. Most cafes at the Point Lookout Bus Terminus close soon after lunch. After lunch we will explore the stunning Gorge Walk (2km). Returning, we will catch the 3:30pm Bus 880 back to Dunwich and then 4:15pm ferry, arriving at Cleveland around 4:45pm.
Ferry tickets can be purchased on board or office. There are student and senior discounts, so bring your discount card as evidence onboard. Stradbroke bus is $1 return for everyone.
