QNC has been invited to a Land for Wildlife property at Talegalla, near Bauple. The 40 acre bush property contains a number of rare/endangered animals and plants, including an endangered cycad, Macrozamia pauli-guilielmi, a vulnerable cockatoo, Calyptorhynchus lathami, and three vulnerable frogs, Adelotus brevisCrinia tinnula, and Litoria freycineti. There have been 2,644 species observed on the property.

This property was part of the Talegalla Weir Estate development in the 1980’s. The landowner notes – It was selectively logged though few trees were suitable and most were left. Some that were cut down were left presumably because they were found to be hollow. Most of these are still here lying on the ground. The vast majority of the trees that were logged were Lophostemon confertus which grow in a few scattered patches. Some mature specimens remain. Many of the stumps resprouted from ground level with multiple trunks. I have mostly trimmed these back to the largest one. I have also periodically thinned this regrowth to help restore the original structure and there are some good stands now.

A wildfire burned the property shortly after being logged and removed most of logging debris such as the canopies of the felled trees.
It appears the logging and following wildfire triggered some tree regrowth as unnaturally dense thickets. The majority of the trees were Corymbia intermediaAllocasuarina littoralisAllocasuarina torrulosa and Eucalyptus acmenoides and in the wetter areas Lophostemon suaveolens and Melaleuca quinquenervia. Most trees in these thickets were stunted and the density supressed any understorey. But there were some patches of immature Allocasuarina littoralis. These have mostly died over the last decade. It seems their roots were damaged due to being sodden in some very wet years around 2011. Some big Banksia integrifolia also died at the same time presumably for the same reason. The remaining species making up the thickets were not affected. Over the Summer of 2024/25 I selectively thinned these thickets removing a total of 3817 trees and continue to assess and thin out some remaining patches bringing the total count of trees removed to over 4000. A control plot of untouched thicket remains against the western boundary.
