Details: Night Excursion – searching for nocturnal invertebrates and other wildlife
Ecosystems we are visiting; littoral, riparian forest and dry rainforest/vine scrub with edges. Some more open Eucalypt forest up in the surrounding elevated terrain. Dominant vegetation Backhousia sp. in creek lines, some restricted rainforest species in patches on site. Some larger Eucalypts on the surrounding higher ground. Some revegetation areas may be of interest down the road (Ross Rd park, on northern side of site, bordering Upper Kedron)
Geology: creek line with boulder habitat in sheltered gulley.
Obtain a Species list from iNat or elsewhere; Various phasmid species present. A good representation of locally found species. Plus possibility of a few ‘special’ ones. Suggest walking edges of forest, on the grassed open area, also walking the narrow track down by the creek. Best to do in two groups, to minimise impacts on the environment and focus search efforts. Will likely have handheld UHF communication available for group leaders (supplied). Pests to prepare for; Ticks and mosquitoes.
Note: there may be other members of the public present as this is National Park estate and open use. Collecting of material not permitted without suitable permit.
The use of the iNaturalist app. is encouraged, the CSIRO guide to stick and leaf insects of Australia (will be available on the night). Other CSIRO field guides relevant to local invertebrates, eg. Beetles, Moths, Spiders etc. could be useful
Amenities: Flush toilets on site, BBQ facilities and picnic tables. Limited mobile coverage (with Telstra) at the site. Other network providers may differ.
