Mt Bangalore, Main Range National Park – Weekend Excursion, Fri 29 to Sun 31 Aug 2025

Description: This excursion is to southwest corner of Queensland’s Scenic Rim, not too far from the State Border. We will be based on private property located just to the southeast of Mt Bangalore, which lies on a ridge running east from the Main Range escarpment. This property is accessed from the Head Road, which leads to Killarney via Queen Mary Falls. The property adjoins the Main Range National Park on three sides. The property has been semi cleared for grazing and is slowly being revegetated. It is still actively used for grazing. In the uncleared areas, vegetation consists of tall eucalypt forests, with a shaded creek and gullies running off Mt Bangalore. There is at least one small rocky area supporting a “heath” community. Five small dams are also on the property. We hope to explore the property and adjacent National Park looking for items of natural history interest. For the adventurous there is also the option of hiking up Mt Bangalore. There is quite interesting flora to be found on the open rocky areas of the mountain.

Getting there: Details on how to find the property will be provided when people register. Please leave all gates as you find them.

Meeting Details: Arrive Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. Participants are also welcome to come for a day. Our “naturalising” explorations will start at 9.00am from Ray’s house.

What to Bring: Food, a stove for cooking, warm clothes, insect repellent and walking gear such as boots and poles. If you want to use the fire pit, bring your own timber.

Amenities: Drinking water and a composting toilet are located at the house. Flat areas for camping are located near the creek, and caravans could be parked closer to the house. Ray has kindly offered to share the house with us for the weekend. It has one room with a double bed, and a second with four bunk beds. The living room could also sleep four using sofa beds and mattresses. Please indicate in your registration if you would like to sleep at the house.

Other: The road to the property is graded, but the roads on the property are rougher. These can be negotiated by conventional vehicles and caravans with care. Participants are welcome to stay an extra night and leave Monday.
