Mid Week Excursion, Tuesday 2nd April to Saturday 6th April, Kwiambal National Park, NSW
2 April @ 8:00 am - 6 April @ 5:00 pm
DATE AND TIME
Tuesday 2nd to Saturday 6th April
Details: Details: Kwiambal National Park is a little visited National Park that has much to offer. It is
predominately a granite landscape with some small areas of limestone. Two rivers, the
Macintyre and Severn, run through the park and provide a variety of riparian and gorge
habitat and scenery. There is a variety of scenic bushwalks in the park, many ending at
swimming holes. The area has open forest and woodland, which can be hot during the
day. Temperatures cool off during the nights.
The campsite, Lemon Tree Flat, is a large open area next to the Severn River. Individual
campsites are not defined. The campsite is separated into two areas, the first with vehicle
access and the second without. Members should be aware that it can be a considerable
walk (i.e. approximately 50 metres) down from the carpark to the the river flat for those
who wish to book in the vicinity of campsites 9 and 10. This can be tiring if you have too
much gear. Some picnic tables and fire pits are located within the campground and there
is water available (boil before drinking is advised, but your leader survived). Pit toilets are
provided by NPWS and are well maintained at last visit. There are swimming holes at the
campsite which my kids greatly enjoyed.
There are only 10 campsites available, but many of them can take up to 6 people. So if it
appears booked out, try to join with another member. The club has also booked the group
campsite, which can take 3 vehicles with up to 15 people – contact the president if you
wish to camp there. There is also the cottage, which some members have already
booked, but for which there is some space available for females. Contact the excursion
secretary if this is of interest.
Directions: It is a 5-hour drive to the park, via Warwick, Texas, Bonshaw and Ashford. The
final few kilometers into the park are gravel but fine for 2WD cars with care. Limited
supplies can be purchased in Ashford.
There is no mobile phone coverage at the campsite and in many areas of the National
Park. Telstra is your best bet. Note that some car navigation systems rely on mobile
phone coverage to work.
